Must have been a massive headache. 1 is usually enough for my headaches, but it does take a while to work. Taking 3 occassionally for super-bad pain is okay, but I wouldn't want to make a habit of it. These over-the-counter pain killers are identical to the prescription pain killers - just in smaller doses. Aleve definitely works for headaches.
